Work Feedback

IMG_9147(20170329-182118)

For my work, in the beginning, I just want to show myself a memory of the earthquake, but later,I found that it not only showed the earthquake, but also reflects the desire to survive for human being. In the work, I was in a dark environment, the audience can only see the candle light, the entire space very quiet. The audience’s eyes were focused on me, and I moved slowly, trying everything possible to approach the candlelight. Because of the presence of rocks around the body, it is difficult to move. When I started to work, I felt the pain that the rock was pressing on me and it was hard to move. I tried to make a sound, but it was hard for me to say a word. In class, I only show a part of the work, not all show. But after the show, I know how to adjust my work.

My tutor gave me advice, let me put the stones scattered around, and finally in a pile of stones. In addition to the use of props, in this quiet space, when I began to perform,  it can match my heart want to express, want to say the voice, etc. Let the audience look not so simple, boring. The audience can also understand through this voice.

In summary, the candles and stones used in my props are like obstacles and light in my life. Candlelight represents people’s desire to survive, the stone represents all the difficulties, only to break through many difficulties in order to obtain warmth and hope.

Interactivity

To be honesty, I cannot understand the meaning about ” Interactivity ” before studying it. When I after reading this book. I found the ” Interactivity ” is connect various materials, such as the communication of audience and performer. For instance, Seven Easy Pieces, when the performer show the performance, the performer look around the audience’s reflection and hear their sounds. On the contrary, the audience focus on performer’s performance and give performer some feedback through their facial emotion and body reflection. An audience is never completely passive, regardless of whether the work that they are watching is described as ‘ interactive ‘ or not. As McAuley(2000:246) said that in the theatre, due to the live presence of both spectators and performers, the energy circulates from performer to spectator and back again, from spectator to performer and back again. This is obvious that communication and exchange is implicit in their presence there together, engaging in and sharing the experience.

Interactivity plays a significant role in Choreography ,like the Popat (2006:34) points out: In interactive artworks the power given to the audience is far greater, and they are made aware of its experience. If the communication between artists(s) and viewer is to be two-way with mutual effect, then the focus of the artwork shifts. Instead of a completed product, the interactive artist design a framework that contains the potential for the creative experience of the participant. For me, it means that interactivity should connect Body, Space,Time with Technology together, besides, the audience’s reflection and performer’s experiences. In my work, I need to think about these materials.

I gave this video Link, I found that the choreographer puts all the materials in this work and attract audience’s eyes and makes the audience to think about the background and the movement, the gesture and dance vocabulary. That’s what I understand for ‘ Interactivity ‘.

Constructs of Time

Time-Tracking

Meet in a completely new territory, and build from that timeless time spent together…And really, that’s the only way I can see: to have time is to create time in performance.(Abramovic, cited in Thompson and Wesley 2005:48)

In previous studies, time is not important in choreography, and I don’t think Time is a very important part in Choreography. I create work according to the work’s theme and structure. If I want to describe a story, rely on their theme and the development of structure. But after finishing this course, I know the significance of Time. As Sylviane Agacinski points out in her wonderful study Time Passing:’awareness of time is neither pure nor originally, and it cannot be separated from the empirical contents that structure it'(2003:33). which means that time follows the structure of work, use time to describe clearly what stories and plot you want to express. For example, the whole duration of work is 10 minutes, and the choreographer want to express a person’ daily life. And how can the choreographer start with it ? Because just 10 minutes. So, choreographer need to reduce some unimportant things to express. Catch the significant key to show it. And the key is follow the time and the time is pursue the content and structure of work. Look this question,I considerate my own work, I think about how can I use the time to express it and what important plot can I show to audiences ?  I connect the constructs of Time with my work.

I am sitting on the floor, using my heart  to feel the Time. I saw the candles on the corner of wall, keep gazing….During gaze, I brewing emotion and use the candles to recall my memories. The Time follows content and structure. From my perspective, Time can only go forward, can not stop. Henri Bergoson’s Matter and Memory(1896) notion that ‘what I call’ my present’ has one foot in my past, and another in the future’. This sentence is meaningful to me, and let me to think about the constructs of time. Actually, this sentence is emphasize the creation of new works and techniques to replace the traditions of what was perceived to be a wholly decadent past. Therefore, in my work, it can combine with the speed of time. slow, quick, stop, static…

Think about readings

Body

Noe argues that perception is a ‘skillful [bodily] activity’, and is not just the reception and decoding/processing of information/data from the world out there. Instead,it requires that we move through, inhabit and act in the world-a kind of ‘practical knowledge’ or ‘know-how'(Noe 2004:11). Actually, it leads me to try different physical movements. Performer watch and percept the space and during the body through observing choice physical movements. During the process of bodily activity, make body to explore practical knowledge. For instance, I put the props in the space. For me, first thing is that I will observe the location and think about what physical movements can use here from static to dynamic. And which postures can express my experiences. Secondly, I can try the postures and connect with my body to refine some uncomfortable postures and make audiences think what the meaning about this postures.

Space

As Yan Hao (2014)mentioned about that “In order to fully use space, the choreographer should create carefully the stage space from internal space to external space, from invisible to visible”. Which means the space is also play a significant role in creating work mainly because space it can express various science and partly because it directly give audiences different visual effects and benefit audiences to look clearly and feel the real scene. So, I connect with this materials into my work. I start with the corner of the space. The reason why I do this because I want enlarge the audiences’ visual effects. It makes them have a large space to look a girl, and give audiences some feeling. Besides, I do this because I want use my methods to describe the work. In short , space can influence performers’ performance and audiences’ visual effects, choreographer can according their own ideas to refine the position of space. Just like Schechner said that “Space ought to open to each other so that spectators can see each other and move from one place to another. The overall feel of the theater ought to be a place where choices can be made (Schechner 1994:30).” Choreographer should create an open space and find different position to audiences. Connect my work, the audience should see my work from the whole space, and I should create work from different space, such as corner and floor and so on.

Time

‘What I call’ my present’ has one foot in my past, and another in the future'(Rush 1999:12) Time, for me,  it can guide my work. For example, if a person not do work for a whole day, how can he knows what time to sleep, to eat food, to play, to take shower ?  Yeah, time can guide people to do something. Time to 8:00am, people knows get up. 12:00am, eat lunch. 16:00pm, leave home for an hour…. For choreography, is the same thing. I keep this posture for 2 minutes and slowly move another postures. And choreographer can describe clearly the plot for work during a certain duration. .it means that I can play with time. So, That is key points why should we follow the time.

Space and Light

As Xiang Liu (2013) mentioned that ” The visual space is based on the understanding of the natural environment and the spatial impression. And stage space is fixed in space with a certain width, height and depth; Compared with the visual space, the stage space is infinite possibility space. According to the different requirements of the stage, stage often need to create different visual space effects. To a large extent, the study of the composition and regulation of visual space has become an important basis for shaping the stage space environment.” Through this sentence, I got some inspirations. I use the studio 3 on Friday. Firstly, I open the light and sitting the central space, I put some noise to listen. I feel it kind of very hard to influence me. Moreover, I close the light and sitting the corner, be silent. I  lay the floor, I feel so scary, there are no people in this space. In addition, I took my phone to saw the photos about earthquake , I recalled some memories, these environment and photos stimulate me. so, I cry, I cannot see the photos. About 15 minutes, I cheer up and open the light. I according this sentence to practice it and I got the summary.

Visual space can be obtained by observing the natural phenom20130417022547555enon of visual experience, but also from a number of paintings depicting the natural environment in the discovery of a large number of processing space information and performance methods. The painting put the three-dimensional space transformed into a two-dimensional plane, so that, the viewer can have appreciating visual space in the process. Stage space can combine unlimited visual space with a limited space, let the audience to produce visual space in the process of watching the performance. It can be seen that the art of painting is similar to the effect of the visual space and the stage art. That painting is created by brush to create the space, the stage is created by lighting and choreographer to create the space. Therefore, I can connect the perspective of painting with the stage of visual space. Whatever painting or stage art, for deal with the space, firstly, it will divided into different level for compare and contrast relationship to the whole space. Secondly, characterization on the same spatial level will use the color temperature of expression in order to achieve richer visual effects.  Such as the picture,

Connect with my work, I also use different space give audiences various space. And different light it can produce various effects for audiences. Like Bright color lighting represents happy emotions, on the contrary, Dark color lighting show sad emotions. The lighting follow with the plot of work and make audiences feel the emotions.
